If you do own jewellery that’s insanely rare, or precious or even heirloom, the Cannes red carpet is perhaps the best place to showcase it. And Hollywood and the supermodel squad has got the memo down pat. Perhaps the most glittering edition of the film festival yet, Cannes not only saw some of the most famous Indian names claim their space on the red carpet, but also witnessed the comeback of maximalist, rare and bold statement pieces. From super unique high jewellery pieces to vintage,19 th century designs, the jewellery at Cannes was at its flashiest best.
Monica Belucci
Monica is famous for her love of exaggerated, high jewellery; her Cannes pick this year was a very rare and a rather historic one. Monica looked like a million bucks at the premiere of a film, and chose to wear a 1975 Cartier necklace, featuring a fully-grown crocodile, originally designed for Mexican star Maria Felix. The piece featured 1,023 yellow diamonds, 1,060 emeralds, and two cabochon rubies, and is a gorgeous specimen of Cartier’s European craftsmanship.
Dakota Fanning
We love how Dakota Fanning always keeps her bling selection grown-up, and non-fussy. For the premiere of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the star picked an old school Edwardian necklace by Chopard. Dakota’s necklace was a semi-clingy and elegant diamond and yellow sapphire number; very simple and yet very sophisticated.
Marrion Cotillard
French actor Marrion Cotillard opted for an unusually elaborate diamond panelled diamond necklace, featuring spectacularly cut stones. And although Marrion’s neck piece is not an ideal day wear choice, she obvious pulls it off. She paired it with a heavy-set pair of sapphire danglers, but we do wish she had gone a little easy on the big jewellery front.
Toni Garrn
Supermodel Toni Garrn has got the right idea about how to sport high jewellery on a summer day. She kept it breezy with both her looks; her first outing saw her choose a rather Victorian layered necklace set, paired with a stunning diamond high choker, all featuring the same silhouette. We love the tone-on-tone consistency of her look and how it immediately classes up her ensemble. For her second outing, she wore a simple diamond bow necklace; it’s chic, it’s modern, and it’s almost non-flashy.
Carla Bruni
Former French first lady Carla Bruni kept it safe but superbly graceful in a pair of blue and white gemstones danglers. Matching your jewellery with your dress, especially if it’s something this elegant, is always a win-win.
Isabeli Fontana
Of course, former supermodel Isabeli Fontana kept it very neat and fashionable at the Cannes red carpet. She sported a necklace featuring diamond encrusted embellishments. What we love about Isabeli’s well-cut statement necklace is how it tones down the mood of the very flashy ensemble she’s wearing; she ends up looking just the right amount of glamorous, and her stylist obviously deserves big praise for this look.
