Gauahar Khan sets the template for maximalist millennial brides with her show-stopper heritage bridal jewellery

2020 has been a year of intimate weddings with minimalism being reflected in choices of clothes and jewellery alike of many celebrity couples. But, perhaps the tinsel-town was waiting for model-actor Gauahar Khan to tie the knot with beau Zaid Darbar, son of music maestro Ismail Darbar and turn the tide with her maximal bridal jewellery choices. Here’s what makes the stunning Gauahar Khan’s maximalism tick in the millennial bridal milieu.

Persian aesthetics flanked on a jadau set make Gauahar’s Mehendi look magical

Rising up to the colour-theme of her Mehendi ceremony Gauahar styled her bright green sharara set with a full jadau bib necklace inspired by Persian aesthetics and jhumkis from Madhuban by Manubhai Jewellers’ Persian Dreams collection. The gold set encrusted with red gemstones, polki and festooned with light-hued emerald is high on intricate details. Gauhar also sported a paneled matha patti, a bold choice for occasion wear, to keep the look elaborate and further nuanced. A style befitting for modern brides who are willing to experiment with more ornate pieces and move away from the minimal basics. Zaid stole from his bride’s style and opted for a similar outfit in green and accentuated his look with a gold brooch.

Ahoy! Make way for the modern-day begum shining through in exquisite Maharani jewellery

Gauahar looked like a vision in white at her private Nikaah ceremony and let her Maharani jewellery do the talking. The heavy-set ensemble of jewellery by Razwada Jewels featured two statement necklaces, shoulder-duster earrings, mangtikka, a staple Muslim passa and hathphool, all immaculately handcrafted with heritage techniques keeping in mind modern-day aesthetics like broad panels encrusted with over-sized polki stones, light – hued emerald accents, and hints of pearl. The love-birds chose to t(win) with their ivory outfit colours but it was Gauahar’s exquisite jewellery that stole the spotlight for us. A choice that was maximal yet had a new-age vibe and blended well with the undertones of heavy embroidery on the brides’ tunic and gharara. A pick jo hume ‘Qubool Hai’.

Heavy-set jewellery teamed with a dainty tiara adds poise to Gauahar’s grand reception look

For the grand wedding reception, Gauahar relied on matching the tonality of her jewellery with her lehenga. The newly-minted bride opted for a heavy-set uncut diamond bridal set ensconced with pearls and tourmalines by Manish Malhotra to complement her gorgeous golden and maroon lehenga. Thoughtful of the style, Gauahar sported a dainty pearl-embellished zaiba-patti (tiara) to balance the opulent look.

Also, we loved how uninhibited Gauahar has been with her versatile hairdresser choices. Ranging from an elaborate mathapatti to a magtikka, a signature passa to a fresh zaiba-patti, the diva with her different winning looks sure was a walking style guide for the millennial brides.

To quote the bride herself, ‘My dream couldn’t be complete without Manish Malhotra being the grand finale of my love story!’ While that’s very humbling of the bride, we bet Manish couldn’t have had a better muse than Gauahar Khan to bring out the glitz and glamour in his creation to life. Do you agree?
